I just blogged about number 3. That was an excellent and inexpensive way to market the ortho practice I worked in. It's amazing what acknowledging patients can do...

I couldnt agree more with Tristan above. DNR or AND, whatever you call it, the end result is the same. Forget semantics. The one who is sentenced, is sentenced. Whether is DNR or AND or any other fancy acronym!

Rather ironic that what sounds like a conjunction is the bit of legislation that signs off the detah sentence!

What doctor in his right mind would admit to making a medical error. This is probably one of the reasons why malpractice insurance costs are so high.

MAs are not entitled to interpret lab results, so unless a licensed person looks at the results and informs the MA, how can an MA tell a patient anything other than 'normal or not normal'..and heaven forbid the patient have additional questions about the lab work!

This is why and LPN or RN can come in handy, also for phone triage too. I agree with Pat, you get what you pay for!

Some days I stare so much at the computer that I think my face is trying to become two dimensional in deference to the monitor.

When I'm having a distracting worry day I write little things on my fingers. I look like a crazed Indian bride with obsessive compulisve henna paintings, but I'll put "Lunch" to remind me about a field trip lunch for my son; "Rx" on another to pick up something at the drugstore on the way home; "Saturday" to remember to scribble down what to make for company....Just looking at the little notes from time to time relieves my stress a little. Patients laugh. Breaks the ice a little.

I'm going to add a "no complaining" bracelet. AND going to get them for my staff. That's awesome!

Good luck today in scrubs...

My patients don't loathe me. Further more, this post was in no way meant to belittle, or castigate people. It is a fact that increased taxes has decreased tobacco consumption. The literature supports this.
Furthermore, the story in the blog is sad, but true. And yes, I think tobacco should be illeagal. It is decimating to the health of America.

Unintended consequence of option #2: increased criminal activity.

From the profits made by cigarette smuggling in NYC to the shootouts between the St Regis Indians and the NYS authorities and Canadian Mounties, criminal activity will increase as taxes on tobacco products increase. It's happening now. Of course, you could look at history and take a look at the #1 & #2 failures in drug prohibition in US history in the 20th and 21st centuries. But then if you honestly looked at those two periods of history you couldn't seriously bring up prohibition, or its little brother prohibitive taxation.

Still wondering why you and your peers feel the need to belittle, castigate, embarrass, and shame people you enjoy legal substances. And then turn around and wonder why your patients loathe you.

I heard Sarah Burd-Sharps, the lead author of Measure of America, (a great resource http://measureofamerica.org/ )
speak about health in America. She made an interesting observation. One of the unhealthiest groups in america are Latino children, because they tended to live in unsafe neighborhoods and their parents would not let them out to play.
The healthiest people live in Minnesota and the state of Minnesota has the highest per capita investment in parks and recreation.
You are right - there is more to the health of the nation than health insurance some of them not so expensive - like parks and recreation opportunities and the exercise suggestions that you make. Others, like public safety and better education are much more challenging.
Your ideas are definitely part of a solution - but you certainly not the major part.
